LEDGER on WingRiders via the direct interface!

Hello Cavaliers! For those of you who don’t know, WingRiders has integrated DIRECT hardware (HW) wallet support – we are the first DEX on Cardano to do so!

Security topics aren’t as hot as features or new projects and airdrops, but we as a community should be increasingly aware of the topic and demand the highest possible standards.
If you have been paying attention to the news lately, you will have noticed that a number of DeFi platforms and providers have been hacked. You can read about it here, here or here. A number of these hacks and exploits took advantage of poor security processes, or in some cases they took advantage of code errors in smart contracts, but also vulnerabilities in software.

In the case of the exchange you trade on, this is a risk that you (hopefully) are aware of and have made an informed choice as a consumer. It is very important to note that this also counts for wallets.

Why are hardware (HW) wallets more secure than software (SW) wallets?

At a basic level, HWs are more secure than SWs because SWs are stored on your computer and are connected to the internet when your computer is, so they are vulnerable to any malware or viruses, such as KPOT and others. They could potentially be affected by a hardware failure in your computer. If you want to learn more, you can read this blog post by Ledger themselves here.

For those of you who have been with us since the beginning, it’s worth remembering that VacuumLabs did the initial integration work to bring Ledger and Trezor to Cardano and maintain the integrations since 2018 – we’ve leveraged that expertise through their developers and turned it into the safest way to trade on ANY DEX on Cardano – direct HW integration with DEX, without the need for a software layer in between.

The older and more mature a platform or device is, the less (again we hope) it is likely to contain potentially catastrophic errors. Ledger is an example of this – they’ve been in the space for a long time and have a strong security pedigree. Their hardware and software are among the best on the market. So if you trust your HW wallet provider and you trust your DEX, what’s the problem? Well, in the case of many DEXs, the only way to use them with HW wallets is to use third-party software in between (e.g. a SW wallet like Typhoon or Eternal). In addition, the direct integration with a hardware wallet is convenient, it allows users to interact with the WingRiders platform without the need for software. With WingRiders, our developer mindset made us want to provide DIRECT hardware integration. It’s not that we have any issues with 3rd party software, but we do understand that adding complexity or an extra layer increases risk, so the direct integration was a way to reduce risk.

What does this mean for users? Well, simply put, using our direct integration method, it allows users to even access the WingRiders platform directly from any Android device, using their ledger. (Don’t worry, Trezor support is coming too). We believe we are the first DEX on Cardano to provide direct Android integration and usage to its users.

We are working hard to improve functionality alongside security for our users to provide the most secure environment for our riders to trade on. Direct Ledger (and Trezor!) integration is just one of the functional enhancements WingRiders are bringing to market in Q2. Here’s a list of other fixes and updates we’ve added over the past 6 weeks.

  • Improved compatibility with Eternel when transactions are pending (balance and warranty)
  • Improved compatibility with Nami (potential fix for txs failing after signing)
  • Changed how available balance is acquired from the wallet (should now be more in sync with the wallet)
  • Improved transaction confirmation user flows
  • The total fees shown no longer include the Oil ADA deposit
  • Fixed an issue that could prevent liquidity from being removed
  • Fixed an issue that could cause inaccurate calculation of deposited lp tokens preventing users from depositing tokens
  • Improved search for stake pools (now fuzzy search, improvements still planned)
  • Reduced default slip values on mainnet (1.0% -> 0.5%)
  • Improved messaging and communication around skid, farm management and oil ADA (depot)
  • Token selection now sorts more relevant tokens, instead of alphabetizing them
  • Improved farming UI with current era calculations, countdown timer and additional information such as total rewards
  • Calculate and display all rewards
  • Fixed a bug that did not show some transactions when connecting to the general ledger
  • Improved loading for ledger (further improvements pending)
  • Lots of infrastructure improvements to increase stability, speed, and security (more improvements in the pipeline)

Stay tuned and stay safe!
